Sherman
M4A4 75 VVSS DV (UK, WW2)
However,
the number of Ford V8 GAA engines proved insufficient to keep pace with
production, so another version, the M4A4, with a Chrysler Multibank A57
petrol engine like the M3A4 on which it was based, went into production in
June 1942. The Multibank engine is built from a star-shaped combination of
five in-line 6-cylinder side-valve car engines (Chrysler Royal) on a
single crankcase. This tank had a longer hull (+16cm), like its cousin
Lee, to accommodate the large Chrysler multibank A-57 engine. Most were
shipped to the British via Lend-Lease and many were converted to Firefly
Vc. It was produced in a single factory (Detroit Tank Arsenal) from July
1942 to November 1943, with 7,499 examples built.
