Sherman
M4A2 early DV Hull, M3 bogies style (USA/UK/SOVIET, WW2)
The
shortage of the excellent Continental aircraft engine, used on the M4 and
M4A1 Shermans, forced the Americans to install other engines in the
Sherman hulls. The M4A2 version (the English Sherman III) received a GM
diesel engine.
The
M4A2 version of the Sherman used a welded hull almost identical to the
M4A1, but with a pair of ventilated armored grilles on the rear hull deck.
The M4A2 tanks used the GM 6046 twin diesel engine. This was the preferred
version for Soviet Lend-Lease deliveries since the USSR only used diesel
engines. The M4A2 was produced in six factories with 10,968 units of all
types produced between April 42 and July 45.
Early
M4A1s also had the M3 pattern bogies.
