1976 American League
Championship Series
1976:
ALCS (3-2) New York
Yankees (106-53) defeat Kansas City Royals (100-62) |
Just like in the actual 76 season, the Yankees and Royals found themselves deadlocked in game 5 going into the 9th inning.
This time there heroics by Chambliss and the game went into extra innings. After a scoreless 10th Mayberry led off the top
of the 11th with a double. Cowens bunted him over to 3rd. With one out and the infield in, Stinson hit a hard grounder to Jim
Mason who looked back Mayberry and threw out Stinson for the second out. With two out, Frank White hit a grounder up the
middle and Mason got there just in time and his throw to first ended the inning.
In the Yankee 11th White singled to lead off the inning but was forced out when Rivers grounded to Brett. Rivers then stole
second putting the winning run in scoring position. Mark Littel's next pitch was driven to left and Rivers raced home with the
winning run and the pennant for the Yankees. As in real life, Littell was the loser in game 5. Munson earns series MVP with
a 474 average. The Yanks travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies in the World Series on the 16th. Kudos to Bill for
winning the West and his fine coaching job in the series. Three of the five games were decided by one run. |
