Game MVP: Mike Schmidt
Veterans Stadium, Time 3:27, 63ø, 10mph Left to Right
With their backs to the wall, Cincinnati came out swinging in game 3 scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st
inning. Philly cut the lead in half with a run in the 2nd, but the Reds added 2 more in the 3rd on a 2 run
homer by George Foster to lead 4-1. Mike Schmidt's solo shot in the bottom of the 3rd made the score 4-2,
then both teams added runs in the 4th. The score remained 5-3 in favor of the Reds until the bottom of the
7th when the Phillies plated 3 runs thanks in part to a bases loaded hit by Garry Maddox. Philadelphia added
an insurance run in the 8th to take a 7-5 lead into the 9th inning with closer Ron Reed on the mound. An error,
a walk, and a 2 RBI double by Foster tied the game and chased Reed, but the Reds could not bring home Foster
to take the lead. In the bottom of the 9th in a tie game, series MVP Mike Schmidt stepped up to the plate and
hit his 4th homerun of the series off of reliever Rawley Eastwick to send the Phillies to the World Series.
